The following items are capitalized in reference list entries:

  • Proper nouns, e.g., American InterContinental University.
  • The first letter of each major word in a heading.
  • The first letter of each major word in a journal title, e.g., Journal of Postsecondary Education and Disability.
  • The first letter of the author's last name and initials, e.g., Doe, J. K. Smith
  • The first letter of the editor's last name, initials, and abbreviation for the designation "editor" e.g., Smith, J. A. (Ed.). (2008)
  • The first letter of the title and subtitle of a book, book chapter or article, Rethinking global health: Frameworks of power
  • The first letter of the title of an article from a journal, magazine, or newspaper.

The following items are italicized in reference list entries

  • The titles of books, reports and web pages, e.g., Rethinking global health: Frameworks of power.
  • The title of periodicals (journals, magazines, newsletters, newspapers), e.g., Journal of Postsecondary Education and Disability.
