How do I cite a live chat session in APA?

Citations for personal communications such as live chats, emails, instant messages, and similar communications should not appear on an APA reference list. However, you can provide an in-text citation to use such information within your paper. When using that information, mention the author/person who said the information, quote that information, and then include the month, day, and year in an in-text citation. When writing about it, include mention of where the communication took place (such as saying “Dr. G. Drobek noted in an online chat….”). You can find examples of proper formatting on this page.
