How do I format a paper in APA format?

Answer

Exact formatting may vary depending on the instructions for your assignment. Most AIU papers do not require an abstract, even if APA instructions say to include one. You will need a title page, the body text of your paper, and a references page.

You should carefully review this page for formatting instructions. It also includes an AIU Paper Template for Microsoft Word (at the bottom).

You will need to set up your headers for each page. Note that each header should have your paper title in all-caps on the left. On the title page, you should have Running head: YOUR PAPER TITLE. On all other pages, it will just say YOUR PAPER TITLE (replaced by your actual paper title). Your title page will also have centered text including your paper title, your name, American Intercontinental University, and the submission date for the assignment.

Your first page with your actual writing on it should start with your paper title, centered, but not in capitals. All text should be double-spaced, in Times New Roman size 12 font. The paper should have normal 1” margins.

The references page should start with the word References centered, not in all capitals, and not bolded. Each citation should be double-spaced and have a hanging indention. You can right-click on the text, select paragraph, select the Special drop-down menu under Indentation, and select Hanging, to set this.
