How do I include in-text citations in APA?
Answer
In-text citations are usually very simple! You just include them within your paragraph after you reference information from another source. Most in-text citations require three pieces of information: the name of the authors, the publication year, and the page number (or paragraph number if the source does not have page numbers) that the information was quoted or paraphrased from. You put those within parentheses, usually at the end of the sentence or paragraph. If you are directly quoting information, you should put the in-text citation at the end of that sentence, before the period. Wherever the citation is placed, that sentence’s period always goes after the in-text citation.
You can view this page for more formatting rules and exceptions. There are many special rules and exceptions for what to do if you don’t know the publication date, don’t know the author, if the source has 2-5 authors, if the source has 6+ authors, as well as if you are citing information that your source is actually citing from another source that you don’t have access to.
